Definitions
The concept of urban farming has developed, taking various perspectives over time from specific purposes to consider various meanings and activities for the good of society.
The Agriculture and Food Organization defines urban agriculture explaining the form it takes as a product: “Urban agriculture, refers to small areas (e.g. vacant plots, gardens, verges, balconies, containers) within the city for growing crops and raising small livestock or milk cows for own consumption or sale in neighborhood markets” (FAO 1999).
Another definition emphasizing urban farming as a social activity: “A complex system encompassing a spectrum of interests, from a traditional core of activities associated with the production, processing, marketing, distribution, and consumption, to a multiplicity of other benefits and services that are less widely acknowledged and documented.
