Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals ((ENUNSDG))

Definition

Energy: It refers to power derived from some resources to help in undertaking some work or to provide heat or to operate some machine. The source of energy may be renewable (which gets replenished by natural processes) or non-renewable (which will exhaust). It includes electricity and other forms of energy which enable mankind in its activities.

Objective

The primary goal of energy generation is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy resources for all. There are two important goals here – (1) achieving access to affordable energy for everyone to create inclusive development and (2) achieving resilience to the environment by switching over to clean technologies. SDG 7 refers to the sustainable development goal of providing access to an affordable, clean, sustainable, and modern source of energy to everyone by the year 2030. SDG Target 7.1 is to achieve universal access to clean and affordable modern energy. Target 7.2 is to increase the share...
