Definition
The developments in our environment and society have revealed that the way we run our businesses and govern our nations is not sustainable in the long run (Boons et al. 2013; Aagaard 2019). For several years, many nations and companies have primarily acted on their own economic needs without any business considerations for the environment, and the visible consequences hereof strongly emphasize the need for companies to change their behavior toward more sustainable ways of doing business and innovation. These tendencies and developments have paved the way for eco-innovation. As social and natural needs become institutionalized through societal and cultural demands, business models will have to change radically (Birkin et al. 2009a, b), particularly as businesses are expected to ensure adaptations of these needs in order to secure legitimacy, legality, and business success.
