Agricultural Impacts of the 2015/2016 Drought in Ethiopia Using High-Resolution Data Fusion Methodologies

Abstract

Integrating satellite data into GIS and traditional agricultural survey data remains relatively understudied, particularly in developing countries. This paper seeks to partially fill this gap by creating a 6 year, panel data that incorporates the relatively severe 2015/2016 Ethiopian drought. A variety of interesting results emerge, including the ability to better understand impacts on productivity from remote-sensed, GIS and farm management perspectives on maize productivity. In addition, the study explores potential impacts at initial stages in the crop cycle which better understand productivity and production changes earlier in the production season. The goal is to facilitate providing timelier and more accurate, information for potential policy action in the face of extreme weather events such as the recent Ethiopian drought.
