Definitions
Empowerment is a process of empowering the invisible and vulnerable people. Empowerment leads to a developing fundamental capacity, greater self-possession, and an inner transformation of one’s cognizance that enable one to overcome external barriers (Sen and Batliwala 2000). According to Mechanic (1991), “a process in which individuals learn to see a closer correspondence between their goals and a sense of how to achieve them, and a relationship between their efforts and life outcomes” (p. 641). Later on, The Commission for Social Development coined an inclusive definition, which explains Empowerment as an iterative process with key components including an enabling environment that encourages popular participation in decision-making that affects the achievement of goals like poverty eradication, social integration, and decent work for all as well as sustainable development (UNSDN 2012).
