According to Fredricks et al. (2004), there are three dimensions of engagement which are as follows:

  1. 1.

    Behavioral engagement: It means where it involves students’ participation in education specifically in the academic, social, and extracurricular activities of the school.

  2. 2.

    Emotional engagement: The students’ emotive reactions in the classroom and in the school. This is about a sense of belonging or connectedness to the school.

  3. 3.

    Cognitive engagement is looking at students’ investment in their education (motivation and self-regulation).

Appleton et al. (2008) recognize the view of engagement as a primary theoretical model for understanding dropout, and it is essential to stimulate school completion and defines it as graduation from high school with appropriate academic and social skills to participate in secondary enrolment options or the world of working environment.
