Definition
With respect to aging, the concept of an “oldest-old” database, rather than the individual-case “anecdotal” example, likely began with the start of centenarian studies in the 1980s and 1990s, including the New England Centenarian Study, the Georgia Centenarian Study, and the Okinawa Centenarian Study. These studies began as efforts to focus on what diet and lifestyle factors in particular were associated with extreme human longevity. Later, some shifted focus to add a biological study component with biosampling.
