Definitions

Depression is a mood disorder which significantly impairs an individual’s ability to live a normal life and severely affects their mental health and well-being. Depression is characterized by chronic feelings of sadness and a loss of interest and enjoyment in everyday activities. Although feeling sad is part of depression, depression is not simply sadness. The emotion of sadness is a core part of the human experience that everyone will experience at one point or another as a normal response to life events such as the loss of a loved one. Depression differs in that it takes a chronic, long-lasting form and requires no trigger to begin. As a clinical disorder, depression is defined by official nosologies such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases(ICD-10).
