Definition

Desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP)-like pattern is characterized by distal airspace accumulation of pigmented macrophages histologically identical to DIP; however, in contrast to DIP, it is a nonspecific histologic finding seen in association with a preexisting pulmonary process.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    The incidence of DIP-like pattern is not known. However, DIP-like pattern is currently accepted as a common occurrence in cigarette smokers presenting with lung diseases other than DIP. DIP-like pattern was first described in 1967 by Scadding and Hinson, shortly after the description of DIP by Liebow et al. (Bedrossian et al. 1977). They reported the finding of DIP in association with usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) and suggested that DIP was a phase in the development of UIP rather than a distinct interstitial pneumonia.
