Definition
Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant salivary gland-type neoplasm with distinct histopathological and clinical features, which occasionally occurs as a primary tumor in the lung (Mondal and Saha 2008).
Clinical Features
Incidence
Primary pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma has been variably reported as accounting for 0.09–2% of cases of bronchogenic carcinoma. It accounts for 20–35% of all tracheal tumors and, in about 10% of cases, arises more peripherally in the lung parenchyma, presumably derived from glands in small bronchi.
Age
Adenoid cystic carcinoma typically affects adults; the presenting age at diagnosis ranges from 21 to 79 years, with a mean incidence in the fifth decade. The tumor only rarely occurs under the age of 30 (Corrin and Nicholson 2015).
Sex
There is an approximately equal incidence in males and females (Corrin and Nicholson 2015).
Site
These tumors occur most frequently in the trachea and proximal larger airways, although some...
