Definition
Culturally significant practices associated with a people and/or a place, and any symbols used in relation to these.
Description
Culture is an elusive term, but it is a commonplace that there are national cultures, even if they bring to mind nothing more sophisticated than stereotypes of Gallic pride, German efficiency, and scrupulous Japanese politeness. Regions and localities within nations have cultures too, and culture is linked to ethnicities, existing within or across national borders. Immigrant communities too bring aspects of their cultures with them. At its broadest, culture encompasses distinctive ways of life in general: whatever we do around here, especially if it differs from their ways over there. Culture thus supports conceptions of collective identity.
Closely linked to culture are ideas of heritage, which evoke culture as a form of legacy to be passed on between generations....
