Historical Background

Ikeda and colleagues were the first to refer to MASPs, in 1987. They described MASP-1 as the activating component of the mouse bactericidal Ra-reactive factor (RaRF). RaRF circulates in plasma as a complex of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and serine proteases, activating the complement factors C4 and C2 upon binding to lipopolysaccharides in Ra chemotype Salmonella (Gram-negative) bacteria (Ikeda et al. 1987). Five years later, Matsushita and Fujita identified MASP-1 in serum, complexed with MBL (Matsushita and Fujita 1992). Thiel et al. identified a second MASP in 1997, named MASP-2 (Thiel et al. 1997).
