Definition
Localized malignant mesothelioma was recognized as a distinct entity and added to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors in 2004 and is defined by the WHO as a rare localized malignant neoplasm, “without gross or microscopic evidence of diffuse pleural spread, but with the microscopic, histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of diffuse malignant mesothelioma” (Churg et al. 2004). Localized malignant mesothelioma of the pleura was first described in 1994 by Crotty et al., and since 2012, only 53 cases have been reported in the literature (Nakano et al. 2012). These malignant tumors, though localized, are classified as T3N0M0 (stage III) based on the AJCC 2010 cancer staging classification system.
The largest series of localized malignant mesotheliomas to date was published by Allen et al. in 2005 who reported 23 patients, of which 21 patients had follow-up...
