Abstract
The first university campuses in Brazil were constructed without consideration for sustainable development, environmental preservation, and sustainability. However, this situation evolved with a series of events and declarations in the global context that were paramount to changes in paradigms and people’s awareness. This study discusses the sustainability policies on university campuses, especially with regard to the paradigm shift around the world in the practice of socio-environmental sustainability at higher education institutions. The objective of this study is to discuss the implementation of sustainability policies at university campuses. For this, we used bibliographical and documentary research to search books, periodicals, and other documents about the set of themes of this research. The hypotheses indicate that a university and its campus may develop environmental actions and policies aimed at preserving the environment. As a preliminary conclusion of the research, we found that opportunities for action exist at educational institutions, which can adopt sustainability parameters in their daily routine operations and policies.
