Substance Use and Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration

Abstract

The present chapter examines evidence concerning associations between misuse of substances and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. There is consensus that alcohol misuse is consistently associated with IPV perpetration; however, this association is exceedingly complex, of moderate strength, and impacted by a variety of moderating factors. Misuse of substances other than alcohol show a more inconsistent connection to IPV perpetration. We examine the ability of existing theoretical approaches to make sense of these complex associations. In particular, we focus on the Instigating-Impelling-Inhibiting (I3) Model as an ideal framework to model how substance misuse facilitates IPV perpetration. In addition, we examine the implications of this integrative theoretical approach as a basis for (a) future research on substance misuse and IPV perpetration, especially from a dyadic perspective and (b) the development of effective interventions for individuals at high risk for engaging in alcohol-facilitated IPV.
