Definition

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is part of a spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders associated with dysregulation and aggregation of alpha-synuclein (McKeith 2006). DLB is characterized by progressive cognitive decline combined with three additional defining features: (1) pronounced fluctuations in alertness and attention (e.g., frequent drowsiness, lethargy, and disorganized speech), (2) visual hallucinations, and (3) parkinsonian motor symptoms (e.g., resting tremor, muscle rigidity, bradykinesia, and/or postural instability) (see Table 1; McKeith et al. 1996, 2005).
