Definition
Provision of information, tools, and resources to the patient and family regarding the patient’s condition, prognosis, treatment plan, and/or environmental needs in a manner consistent with their learning needs and preferences.
Current Knowledge
The Joint Commission (America’s principal standards setting and accrediting body of health-care organizations) standards require that hospitals “respect the patient’s right to receive information in a manner he or she understands.” It is also noted that, “to achieve the best outcomes, patients and families must be more actively engaged in decisions about health care and must have broader access to information and support.” Whether or not an organization is accredited, these standards are considered to be appropriate guidelines to follow in the provision of quality health care.
