Definition
The mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD) is the principal relay to the prefrontal cortex involved in personality.
Current Knowledge
The mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD) is situated dorsomedially to the internal medullary lamina and is the principal relay to the prefrontal cortex involved in personality. The MD is divided into three subdivisions: magnocellular, parvocellular, and densocellular (or multiform) subnuclei based on anatomical location and cytoarchitecture; however, the subdivision nomenclature varies throughout the literature (Kandel and Schwartz 2000; Boller et al. 2003). The magnocellular subnucleus mainly receives inputs from the amygdala, olfactory tubercle, and entorhinal cortex and sends projections to the orbital and ventromedial frontal lobe involved in acknowledging emotional significance for sights and smells. The parvocellular and densocellular subnuclei receive inputs from the superior...
