ACA; Cerebral artery
Definition
The anterior cerebral artery (ACA) arises as the medial branch of an anterior bifurcation of the internal carotid artery (ICA) at later embryonic stages of development (Menshawi et al. 2015). The ACA supplies the anterior four-fifths of the medial surface of the cerebral hemisphere, frontal and parietal lobes, the anterior four-fifths of the corpus callosum, and a narrow strip of the superior, lateral surface of the cerebral hemisphere (Zhou et al. 2013), as well as the front portion of the diencephalon (Rea 2015). Three major vascular areas supply the head of the caudate nucleus, i.e., Heubner’s artery, the anterior lenticulostriate arteries (from the proximal section of the anterior cerebral artery), and the lateral lenticulostriate arteries (from the middle cerebral artery) (Mizuta and Motomura 2006). Various motor areas are supplied by the ACA including the supplementary motor complex, the anterior and middle cingulate cortex, and the...
