Description

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and its revisions are arguably the most widely used and researched objective measures of personality and abnormal behavior. For the purposes of this entry, the acronym MMPI will be used to refer interchangeably to all versions of the instrument unless otherwise warranted.

The MMPI consists of a number of statements (567 in the current adult version) to which an individual either responds “true,” “false,” or “cannot say.” Responses are then scored on one or more of the four primary validity scales (“cannot say,” L, F, K), the ten primary clinical scales, and numerous other derived secondary scales. See Table 1for a list of the primary validity and clinical scales.
