TUG
Description
The Timed Up and Go (TUG) is a timed test of functional mobility in which the participant stands up from a standard armchair, walks to a line on the floor 3 m away, turns around, walks back to the chair, and sits down. The test requires a fair amount of coordination, strength, and balance.
Historical Background
In 1991, Podsiadlo and Richardson established the TUG as a modification to the Get Up and Go Test, which was originally reported by Mathias et al. (1986).
Psychometric Data
The TUG has demonstrated good test-retest reliability (ICC 0.80–0.99), validity, and sensitivity to change. It has a moderate correlation with fall risk.
Clinical Uses
The TUG has been used to determine baseline functional mobility, fall risk, treatment outcome, and/or discharge readiness for community-dwelling older adults as well as inpatients and outpatients with a wide variety of diagnoses, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, lower extremity amputation, arthritis,...
