Definition
The postural control and balance for stroke (PCBS) includes items on postural changes, sitting balance, and standing balance. Within each category, the items progress from easy to hard. There are seven postural change items, five sitting balance items, four items assessing static standing, and seven items measuring dynamic (moving center of mass) standing. Scores range from 23 (unable to control posture or balance) to 82 (complete independence in posture and balance tasks). It was developed by a physiotherapy research laboratory at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland (Pyoria et al. 2005).
Current Knowledge
Internal consistency: In a sample of 50 stroke patients, Cronbach’s alpha values were 0.98 for the postural change items, 0.77 for the sitting balance items, and 0.94 for the standing balance items (Pyoria et al. 2005).
