Anticonvulsant.
Proposed Mechanism(s) of Action
Blocks voltage-sensitive sodium channels, inhibits the release of glutamate, and potentiates GABA. Theoretically inhibits carbonic anhydrase.
Indication
Partial seizures, primary generalized tonic/clonic seizures, seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut, migraine prevention.
Off-Label Use
Bipolar mood disorder and weight management.
Side Effects
Serious
Metabolic acidosis, kidney stones, rare narrow angle closure glaucoma, hyperthermia (more frequently seen in children).
Common
Nausea, decreased appetite, problems with concentration, reported difficulties with word-finding, sedation, asthenia, dizziness, ataxia, agitation, and visuomotor tremor.
