Short Description or Definition

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity, which most often arise in early to middle childhood, result in functional impairment across multiple domains of daily life activities, and remain relatively persistent over time.

Categorization

DSM-5 defines three ADHD presentations: predominantly inattentive (ADHD-I), predominantly hyperactive/impulsive (ADHD-H/I), and combined (ADHD-C). ADHD-C is the most prevalent subtype in clinically referred samples yet the true population prevalence of ADHD-C and ADHD-I is likely comparable, each accounting for roughly half of the ADHD cases (Wilcutt 2012).
