Definition

Sexual dysfunctions include a diverse set of disorders. Typically, those individuals experiencing sexual dysfunction present with clinically significant disturbances in his/her ability to respond sexually or to find pleasure in sexual experiences. Disorders are typically classified into four categories: (1) desire disorders, (2) arousal disorders, (3) orgasm disorders, and (4) pain disorders.

Current Knowledge

As defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association 2013), sexual dysfunction disorders include:

Subtypes

Delayed ejaculation

Erectile disorder

Female orgasmic disorder

Female sexual interest/arousal disorder

Genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder

Male hypoactive sexual desire disorder

Premature (early) ejaculation

Substance/medication-induced sexual dysfunction

Other specified sexual dysfunction

Unspecified sexual dysfunction
