Description
The Neurosensory Center Comprehensive Examination for Aphasia (NCCEA; Spreen and Benton 1977) is used to assess multiple aspects of receptive and expressive language. The NCCEA consists of 24 brief subtests. Twenty of the 24 subtests are used to assess different aspects of language. The other four subtests are “control” tests that involve visual and tactile functions, which are administered only when examinees perform poorly on other tests involving visual or tactile stimuli (Lezak et al. 2004). The individual subtests can typically be administered in less than 5 min.
Test stimuli consist of common objects, sound tapes, printed cards, a screened box, and tokens. The materials can be purchased or constructed according to instructions in the test manual. Subtest scores are corrected for age and education and can be compared with normative data obtained from adults with low levels of education, persons with aphasia, or persons who had sustained brain injuries...
