Definition
The Mayo’s Older Americans Normative Studies (MOANS) and Mayo’s Older African-Americans Normative Studies (MOAANS) are two ongoing clinical research projects intended to provide frequently updated, valid, co-normed data for commonly used neuropsychological measures administered to cognitively intact older, predominantly Caucasian and African-American, adults (ages 56+) in the United States. The MOANS and MOAANS projects use highly similar study methods, including participants have “normal cognitive functioning” based upon self- and informant reports (Lucas et al. 2005b) and an independent ability to complete activities of daily living. Exclusion criteria for both projects include any active neurological, psychiatric, or medical illnesses or recent utilization of medications that could significantly negatively affect cognitive performance (Rilling et al. 2005). Specific exclusion conditions included dementia, cerebrovascular accidents, movement disorders, intracranial...
