Andrew J. Cherlin, Ph.D. (1948–)
Introduction
Andrew Cherlin has been and continues to be a very influential scholar in the field of family demography. Throughout his career he has studied the changing nature of the institution of marriage and the social effects of marriage and marriage dissolution. More recently he has contributed to knowledge about the influence of socioeconomic status and welfare reform on family structure. Throughout his career Dr. Cherlin has actively published in scholarly journals, newspapers, and other reputable media. He has also written books on family structure and the institution of marriage.
Career
Andrew Cherlin is the Benjamin H. Griswold III Professor of Sociology and Public Policy at Johns Hopkins University. In 1976, he earned his PhD in sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and joined the Sociology Faculty of John Hopkins University where he has been a professor ever since.
