Timothy James O’Farrell, Ph.D. (Born 1946)

Introduction

Timothy J. O’Farrell is a leading authority on couple and family substance abuse treatment and processes. In collaboration with William Fals-Stewart, Ph.D., O’Farrell’s biggest contribution to the field of psychology is the development of Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT). He has significantly influenced the scope of supervision and clinical intervention related to this population. O’Farrell has authored or coauthored 133 peer-reviewed journal publications, 51 book chapters, and 4 books.

Career

Timothy J. O’Farrell received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Boston University in 1975. He began his academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in 1977, where he is currently a Professor of Psychology. He is also the Director of the Counseling for Alcoholics’ Marriages (CALM) Project and Chief of the Families and Addiction Program in the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System, Brockton...
