Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills (PAIRS)
Introduction
PAIRS is a comprehensive relationship education program that serves as a bridge between marriage education/enrichment (primary and secondary intervention) and marital therapy (tertiary intervention). The model integrates marital enrichment, education, and therapeutic treatment in the support of healthy couple relationships (DeMaria 2003). PAIRS focuses on the essential role that primary relationships play in shaping our thoughts and feelings which in turn has a powerful impact on how we view ourselves and perceive and respond to other human beings.
With its broad focus and appeal, the PAIRS program is suitable for couples in relatively healthy, non-distressed relationships who wish to deepen their intimacy, as well as for distressed couples experiencing significant relationship difficulties (DeMaria 2005; Greenberg and Johnson 1988; Hawley and Olson 1995; Wampler 1982; Zimpher 1988).
