Local Names

Azerbaijan: Hİrkan Big; Georgia: – dzmerkhli; English: Poet’s laurel.

Botany and Ecology

Ruscus hyrcanus and R. hypnophyllum: Perennial herbs from 25–40 cm. tall; stems with grooves, with usually 5 branches arising from the top of stem; one erect, and the remainder forming a whorl. Branchlets broadened and flattened as leaves, varying widely in shape, these usually ovate and arising in spiral from branch and these with prominent midrib. Inflorescences born from the base of branchlets and varies widely in position. Flowers with parts in 6, stamens 3, usually in clusters of 2–5, yellow-green. Fruit a large red berry. Dense thickets in forests up to 1200 m. Caucasus: Talysh, Caspian coast of Iran. Ruscus hyrcanus spreads by seed and by means of underground rhizomes and it can colonize extensive patches of ground.
