Botany and Ecology

An erect annual herb to 1 m tall. Stems have ridges, and are glabrous and white. Leaves rough textured, sessile, somewhat clasping stem and oval to linear-shaped with spiny teeth along margin. Flower heads 2.5 m in diameter, solitary the color vermillion to orange-yellow. Involucral bracts large and leaf-like, but shorter than florets with broad bases, outer bracts usually curved and inner bracts usually somewhat spiny. Fruits are achenes, 4 angled with blunt tips, usually bearing no pappus but sometimes with short bristles attached. Mainly in cultivation though rarely naturalized, but widely cultivated in Caucasus, also present in Central to west Asia and northeastern Africa. Flowers and fruits from June to July.
