Botany and Ecology
Herb-like perennial. The calyx is 5-parted. The corolla tube is short, subspherical, the lobes are reflexed. The stamens 5, attached at base of corolla tube. The anthers are broadly or narrowly lanceolate, acuminate, nearly always enclosed in the tube. The ovary is unilocular. The placenta is subspherical. The style is filiform, included or slightly exserted. The ovules are numerous. The capsule is spherical or egg-shaped, opening at apex by 5–8 semi-reflexed teeth. The fruiting peduncles of the native species always spirally twisted, hence the capsules almost lying on the ground. The seeds are semi-spherical and angular. The tuber is almost spherical, but more or less flattened. The leaves are reniform, orbicular, or ovate, always cordate at base. The flowers are solitary, and nodding.
