Abstract
Energy from fossil fuels plays a very important role in our lives. But such an important role has been clouded out due to the environmental hazards caused from fossil emissions. This has led to a new dimension in energy utilization known as renewable energy fuels. Production of biofuels from various lignocellulosic biomasses has been anticipated as an alternative solution to several pressing global concerns: energy security, climate change, and socioeconomic development. Number of research devoted to biofuel extraction from natural sources is growing exponentially to substitute carbon-based, nonrenewable sources along with the fulfillment of energy challenge of twenty-first century. Uncertainty on the overall assessment has been growing with the findings of possible benefits and risks of biofuels. An overview on the sustainable use of non-food biomass for biofuel production to meet the ever increasing demand has been discussed in this book chapter. Moreover, the scales of the effects of current biofuel production and proposed solutions have also been addressed.
