A project of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology located at the Leipzig Zoo in Germany that focuses its research efforts on the study of the behavior and cognition of the four great ape species including chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans (Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research Center 2018).
Introduction
Named after Wolfgang Köhler, the Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research Center was first conceptualized in 1997 after the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology initiated focused efforts on the comparative observation of nonhuman primates. Shortly thereafter, construction of the Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research Center, otherwise known as Pongoland, began at Leipzig Zoo in Germany (Oberwemmer and Rasback 2001).
