Homo floresiensis is an extinct hominin species that survived on the Indonesian island of Flores during the Pleistocene Epoch. Skeletal remains of Homo floresiensis were first discovered during archaeological excavations in the early 2000s at Liang Bua, a large limestone cave located on the western part of the island (Morwood et al. 2004). This species is characterized by small body and brain size, as well as a combination of primitive and derived traits not seen in other hominin taxa (Brown et al. 2004; Morwood et al. 2005).
Holotype
The holotype of this species is known as Liang Bua 1 (LB1) and consists of the partial skeleton of an adult. Its official repository in the National Research Center for Archaeology is in Jakarta, Indonesia. Preserved elements include a cranium, mandible, atlas and other vertebral fragments, ribs, right clavicle, right humerus, left and right ulna, left and right hip bones, left and right femora, left and right patella, left and right tibiae, left and...
