Abstract

Dermoscopy of the nail apparatus (onychoscopy) is an increasingly recognized method for the evaluation of nail disease. It provides clear images of distinct features of nail inflammatory conditions and tumors which may aid in their differential diagnosis. In this chapter, we review the clinical and dermoscopical features of onychopapilloma, onychomatricoma, Bowen’s disease, squamous cell carcinoma, and subungual malignant melanoma. Dermoscopy should be judiciously used as an accessory tool during the physical examination. The therapeutic decision should ultimately be guided by also bearing in mind the clinical history and an eventual need for histology.
