Abstract

Success in dermatologic procedures depends on the thorough consideration of surgical anatomy, techniques, instruments, antiseptic precautions, anesthesia guidelines, as well as postoperative wound management. Such considerations are often location and structure-specific and are primarily guided by anatomical landmarks and functional implications. This chapter discusses these important pieces that together help optimize surgical outcome. Introduction and clinical pearls of the various suturing techniques used in dermatology are also discussed. These techniques include the simple interrupted stitch, continuous stitch, vertical mattress stitch, horizontal mattress stitch, and running subcuticular stitch. Careful consideration and thoughtful selection of suturing techniques can directly alter patient experience and cosmetic outcome. Common procedures performed in dermatology are also introduced and detailed in this chapter. These include biopsy, reconstructive flaps, skin grafts, blepharoplasty, and nail surgery. The fundamental concepts behind each of these procedures and their major subtypes are outlined for a comprehensive introduction to the dermatologic surgeon’s armamentarium. In addition, supporting techniques, such as proper preoperative preparation, hemostasis, and wound dressing, are also discussed. Guidelines and recommendations are evidence-based, arising from surgical experience and prior clinical outcome.
