Definition

Appendiceal mucocele is an obstructive dilatation of the appendix caused by intraluminal accumulation of mucoid material (Fig. 1a, b). This purely descriptive term was first coined by Rokitansky in 1855, and does not constitute a pathological diagnosis. The density of goblet cells is far greater within the epithelium of the appendix than within the colon. As a result, the most frequent appendiceal epithelial tumors are mucinous and begin as mucoceles.
