Definitions

Due to the unique requirements in data center networks (DCNs) such as large scale, high application diversity, high power consumption, strict reliability, etc., the design of infrastructure and operations in DCNs face significant technical challenges. Researchers have been working on respective areas including network topology, optical networking, wireless networking, network virtualization, etc.

Historical Background

The rapid expansion of Internet services make data centers (DC) become a key infrastructure to promote this growing trend. A DC usually accommodates a large number of computation and storage nodes which are interconnected through a DC network (DCN). As the vital part of communication, DCN plays a key role in DC operation.
