Definitions
Interference characterization refers to mathematically characterizing the co-channel interference generated by concurrent transmissions, in terms of its probability density function, Laplace transform, or expectation, via modeling the influential sources of randomness, including the spatial locations of the interferers, the traffic pattern, the medium access scheme, and the propagation channel.
Background
Due to the scarcity of the radio spectrum, resource (e.g., time, frequency, and code) sharing among multiple wireless transceivers is necessary to enhance the radio spectral efficiency of wireless ad hoc networks. Because of the broadcast nature of wireless medium, spatially separated concurrent transmissions in the same radio channel inevitably lead to co-channel interference, which is the main performance-limiting factor.
