Peter Groves, Basel Kayyali, David Knott, and Steve Van Kuiken note that the evolution and use of big data are in its formative stages, and its true potential has yet to be revealed. Mike Cottle, Waco Hoover, Shadaab Kanwal, Marty Kohn, Trevor Strome, and Neil W. Treister write that in 2011, US health care data totaled 150 exabytes, and that number is increasing. To put that figure in a relatable perspective, five exabytes equals 1018gigabytes and that is calculated to be the sum of all words in the human vocabulary. In addition, Cottle, Hoover, Kanwal, Kohn, Strome, and Treister note that there are five separate categories of big data relating specifically to health and health care delivery. First, there are web and social media data that also include health plan websites and smart phone apps, to name a few.
