Hydrocephalus Caused by Basal Ganglia, Thalamic, and Suprasellar Tumors

Abstract

Neuroendoscopy has become a mainstream of modern neurosurgery. In the last years, the scientific community is struggling to better understand pathophysiological mechanisms of ventricular pathology including tumors and hydrocephalus. We also try to improve the usage of the current available technology. Endoscopes are becoming cheaper and can be connected to “towers” that are available in hospitals. With maturation of these new techniques and keeping the patient in the center, we can offer a new level of technology and safety. This chapter provides a review of the surgical considerations when treating patients with obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to deep-seated tumors (basal ganglia, thalamic, or suprasellar), focusing on the role of endoscopy.
