Colonial Administration: An Overview
The English-speaking islands in the Caribbean, often referred to as the Commonwealth Caribbean, are the islands that once constituted the Caribbean portion of the British Empire. These islands include the islands of Jamaica, the Windward Islands (Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, and the Grenadines), Barbados, the Leeward Islands (comprising Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat), and the so-called Northern Islands (the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands).
All the islands in the English-speaking Caribbean were once colonized by the British or later ceded to the British. The following is a timeline of British rule in some of these colonies:
