Definition
Dessler (2013, p. 284) defines performance measurement as the task of “evaluating an employee’s current and/or past performance relative to his or her performance standards.” McDavid et al. (2013, p. 490) defines performance measurement as “the process of designing and implementing quantitative and qualitative measures of program results, including outputs and outcomes.” Based on these two definitions, performance measurement is applicable to the evaluation of an individual as well as a larger unit such as a program, and there are multiple approaches to do this. In fact, it is applicable to a wide range of tasks, such as education and training, machine testing, and organizational management.
