Abstract

Encephalitis is defined as a neurological dysfunction caused by inflammation of the brain. It can have significant morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. This chapter reviews some of the most commonly encountered forms of viral encephalitis encountered in Western industrialized nations. In addition, it briefly discusses the current and relevant international traveling and immunization recommendations regarding these encephalitides. Lastly, a section of this chapter will summarize the role of the neurosurgeon in the management of viral encephalitis including brain tissue sampling and treatment of increased intracranial pressure. It is imperative to recognize the need for collaboration with the goal of improving the outcome of these patients.
