Abstract

In 1893, Mikulicz performed the first ventriculo-subarachnoidal-subgaleal shunt, by implanting a wick made of glass wool into the lateral ventricle of a 6-month-old infant. Since then, subgaleal shunts have been used sporadically and inconsistently for a variety of indications for more than a century (Tubbs 2003b).
