Abstract

The spinal cord is housed in a meningeal compartment and floats freely and weightlessly within cerebrospinal fluid. The meninges and its contents are housed in a bony spinal canal. The spinal cord and the spinal roots snugly fit in the cervical spinal canal and are relatively less compact in the dorsal region. The spinal canal is widest at the level of the atlas. The lumbar spinal canal provides a watery cul-de-sac for cauda equina nerves.
