Definition

Dermatomyositis is a connective tissue disease characterized by inflammatory and degenerative changes of the muscles and skin. Dermatomyositis is one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, a group of acquired skeletal muscle diseases that includes five subsets: classic or adult dermatomyositis (DM), polymyositis (PM), myositis with malignancy, juvenile dermatomyositis/polymyositis, and myositis overlapping with another collagen vascular disorder. Another subset called amyopathic dermatomyositis (ADM) or dermatomyositis sine myositis presenting with only skin involvement for at least 2 years since the diagnosis has been recently recognized. Although there is some overlap, these subsets are indeed heterogeneous both in terms of presentation and pathophysiology.
