Definition

A chronic, benign, self-limiting lesion, commonly presenting as an ulceration with elevated margins on the lateral or ventral surface of the tongue of unknown etiology. It develops rapidly and usually persists for several weeks or months. It may mimic oral cancer. Due to a history of traumatic injury in about one third of the cases, a traumatic cause has been suggested. However, metachronous and multiple synchronous lesions at different sites argue for the fact that other factors than trauma must be involved.

Incidence

Unknown, probably relatively common.

Age

All ages, most commonly in children and young adults. In children, the lesion has been called Riga-Fede’s disease.

Sex

Equal sex distribution. In some series, a male, in others, a female...
